Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) is a safety device that prevents earth leakage. The earth leakage circuit breakers were originally voltage detecting devices; however, they have recently been replaced with current sensing devices. The current ELCB has been renamed RCCB or RCD; however, the voltage ELCBs are still referred to as ELCBs despite being obsolete.
ELCB’s Purpose
The basic purpose of an ELCB is to protect against electrical shock. It keeps track of any leakage current that escapes the circuit via an unexpected channel. Overloading and short circuit current are not protected.
